Splendid set of rebuttals, Chris. Only that it’s a very big stretch to call Kirk, Pearson and Ridley “three of the UK’s leading journalists”. Kirk is an ex-fund manager (nuff said), Pearson the self-described provocateur and successor to Katie Hopkins and Ridley, nephew of the old arch-Conservative minister Nicholas Ridley, writes for the Spectator (nuff again).

Rebuttal 9: Also, European countries currently account for c.10% CO2 emissions, of which our 1% is a significant portion. Not to play our part with our neighbours in total carbon reduction would set a deplorable example to the rest of world and encourage others to follow suit.

Lord spare me from those pushing single issue politics.

Lets forget the science and just say its 100% correct, at that point we can ignore the scientists because this is an issue of politics and engineering.

At that point you have to accept in both fields there is no purity, everything is a trade off.

The bigger picture, everything is in what I call the aviation disaster scenario, you are in a plane at 30,000 ft, it starts plummeting to the ground at 10,000 ft per minute, any solution you come up with has to work, like Apollo 13 with what you have to hand in the timeline available (in this case 3 minutes) or you fail.

If climate was the only issue, fine, it costs money, take it from welfare budgets? Nope that won't work, take it from defence? With Russia and China and already one war? No thanks, how about health? Don't tell me the answer to very problem, tax the rich, take it off big corporations, the usual easy answers that don't work.

We are in an alligator farm, if you want to survive you have to judge which alligator is the most threatening and deal with that first. Which is it?

1) Avoiding a gilt market crash and IMF imposed austerity?

2) Building a national care service

3) 3.5% defence budget and credible defence

4) fixing the NHS

5) Social housing, or other housing

6) Immediate political No 1 - cost of living crisis

I could go on and on, if you continue having the highest energy prices in the world your entire economy is at threat, no amount of increase in renewables will make it cheap because you cannot solve economically the dunkleflaute question which may last upto three weeks in winter without a massive excess of renewables and batteries or other storage which will cost so much that its uneconomic.

The only answer is gas, hydrogen is not an economic answer and therefore renewables means having to keep two entire generating systems with a lot more grid and maintenance costs on top.

The costs have to be born somewhere, that's either bills or taxes, taxes are already at highs and damaging the economy, the economy you need to pay for all government, if it fails under energy prices you lose your engineering base and ability to defend yourself.

Cost of living is the No 1 issue, you cannot keep pushing the costs on to industry and consumers and by that I mean bills or taxes, and you cannot borrow, doing so will cause a political backlash against it, i'd argue it already is.

Its also pointless when China has increased emission by 500% when our much smaller reduction of a small amount ifs 50%. Its not working.

Then you now have unavoidable costs of mitigation on top.

Set against all the other alligators that need to be fed, you are going to be eaten by any number of alligators before this will ever be solved here, let alone worldwide.

There needs to be an acceptance of the plane crash theory, you need to deal with what will kill you today, not the threat of tomorrow because if you aren't alive tomorrow, it doesn't matter does it?

That's why politics is more important and the alligators there are far bigger and much more hungry today than you can ignore.

Adaptation, which is inevitable now anyway has to be the priority, because its going to happen and being net zero might keep you warn at night but you'll be warm anyway unless adaptation is the central theme.
